A common question in building custom homes is, “Where do we start?”. Holland Custom Homes strives to educate and assist you in all of these steps. We want you to know what all is involved up front. There is work involved, but we promise to make the process as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Lot Selection: The first step is identifying the lot location, size, and setting. To many building a custom home, this is perhaps the most important part of the process. HCB can also work with the lot you already own.

Home Size Determination: After a lot size is selected, the home size and shape is determined, and is generally based on the size of the lot. Remember that HCB will work through an extensive checklist of needs, and help determine the home size based on your living requirements per room. This optimizes the home size based on your needs; it makes the home not too big, not too small, but just right for you.

Home Design & Illustration: The next step is the home conceptual design. We can either work with your design, or provide one of our architects. Perhaps you have seen stock plans that closely match your vision, but are not ‘perfect’? We specialize in customization of stock plans, both the exterior and interior design. HCB also provides illustration services to bring your design to life in color. There is no greater thrill in custom home design than to see a creative vision come to reality in a color print.

Material Determination: Next, Holland Custom Builders will help you through the all the decisions of interior and exterior materials and finishes. Exterior determinations include the type (stone, brick, siding), color, door styles, window styles, wrought iron color and style, driveway material & color, deck material & stain, etc. Interior determinations include cabinets, countertops, flooring, paint colors, appliances, light fixtures, etc. Again, remember that HCB is there to guide you through everything.

Final Plans: Completion of all the interior and exterior design work now allows architectural and engineering plans to be sent to the city for approval. The approval process may take 2-6 weeks, and during this period HCB will work with you on small design details not addressed in the A&E plans. After this is done, your decision making process is mostly complete. Once the approvals come back, Holland Custom Builders is ready to start construction. Now sit back, relax, and watch the show!...
