Holland Custom Builders will work closely with you and the architect to discuss construction features to improve home energy efficiency and general comfort. HCB believes that the minimal cost associated with such features are quickly paid back in future utility and maintenance costs. Typical, baseline standards of HCB construction include:

High Density Fiberglass Batt Insulation: High density insulation offers a 15% higher R-value (resistance to heat transfer) than typical quality fiberglass batt, and over 20% higher R-value than typical blown cellulose insulation. HCB provides the proper installation techniques to insure that the thermal qualities are maintained throughout the home.

Instantaneous Water Heating: Instant water heating provides hot water only when it is required for usage, saving energy cost versus typical tank systems which heat water 100% of the time. A whole house “recirculation system” is also an attractive option available on larger homes with more points of use, eliminating the long wait for hot water upon first usage. Note that all hot water piping is insulated from the heater to the points of use. Refer to the Related Links page for further information.

“Low E” Windows: High quality low E (specially coated) windows provide very low heat transmission, and they greatly reduce UV (sun) light transmission which can fade carpets, walls, and furniture over time. The HCB standard windows are at a minimum double pane, argon filled, and feature vinyl frames which eliminate rot potential. Refer to the Related Links page for further information.

Tyvek House Wrapping: This moisture and air barrier which helps maintain dry walls and insulation, helps eliminate mold and rot potential, and helps reduce air infiltration for reduction of heating and cooling demand and reduction of pollen and dust. High Efficiency ‘Energy Star’ Appliances: HCB uses only Energy Star qualified appliances, including the air conditioning unit(s), dishwasher, refrigerator, water heater, and clothes washer(s) / drier(s). The Energy Star label indicates appliances which use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. Use of such appliances qualifies HCB homes for higher energy rating scores, as explained below. Trane High Efficiency Air Conditioning Systems: HCB uses at a minimum 15 SEER units (SEER = Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). Higher SEER units are available upon request. This reduces the heating and cooling energy cost compared to lower cost, lower SEER units. Did you know that the 15 SEER unit provides over a 20% reduction in cooling cost compared to a 13 SEER unit? Also note that HCB provides a dedicated A.C. system per floor level for best comfort and operational efficiency, along with programmable thermostats for automatic setbacks. High Quality Air Distribution Components / Design: Exercising years of commercial installation experience, Holland Custom Builders provides commercial grade ductwork, a grade higher than typical residential. Joints are done with special sealing techniques, not typical “duct tape”, reducing air loss and increasing home cooling and heating efficiency. Did you know that studies have shown that leaky systems lose over 20% of the air needed for heating and cooling? This not only affects energy costs, but can cause air pressure differentials which can draw in crawlspace dust, soil gasses, and even flue gasses. HCB also uses more return ducts than others, and at various sizes, all in order to produce a “self balanced” air system that provides excellent air flow and temperature control room to room with little or no grill adjustments required by the owner. Also note that HCB can provide a whole-house air filtration system for allergy sufferers.
